Puppy Vaccination Schedule
The following vaccination schedule is appropriate for the vast majority of puppies and is highly recommended to insure the future health of your new pet. Nevertheless, the protocol can be adjusted based on your individual living, recreation, and breed-specific circumstances.
The schedule below will assume that you are brining your puppy to us at a minimum of 8 weeks of age and that no vaccinations have been given prior to your first visit with us. If your puppy is under 8 weeks of age or has already received previous vaccinations, please consult our staff while deciding how to adjust the treatment protocol.
The Veterinarians of the Animal Medical Clinic recommend the following vaccination protocol:
8 weeks -
12 weeks -
- Wellness Exam
- Distemper Combination DHPP 5 in 1 or DHPPC 6 in 1
- Bordetella
- Lymes Vaccine – if puppy will have outdoor exposure
- Round/Hookworm Dewormer
- Continue Heartworm Preventative
- Mircochip Implantation
16 weeks –
Of course, you may bring your puppy in to our hospital or clinics prior to 8 weeks-of-age for wellness exams, behavioral consultations, and deworming. However, if the puppy is not yet 8 weeks, we will not begin the vaccination schedule during that visit.
We recommend starting the puppy with their first vaccinations at 8 weeks of age because this age is when the immunity they received from their mother is fading, thus leaving the puppy unprotected. Vaccines given prior to the maternal immunity wearing off (before 8 weeks) will do no good. Similarly, if we wait too long after the maternal immunity wears off, we are placing the puppy at risk for contracting a virus while their immunity is unprotected. Therefore, 8 weeks is the appropriate age to start vaccinating the majority of puppies.
